3 Signs You Have a Bulging Disc

Written By Breen Chiropractic Clinic, PC on March 22, 2021

Signs of Bulging DiscYour spine is made up of a series of bones stacked on top of each other, and these bones are cushioned by discs. The main purpose of these discs is to protect you by absorbing any shocks you may receive from your daily activities.

When these discs face physical trauma or deteriorate with age, you may develop a bulging disc. Though a bulging disc is usually not dangerous, it can still cause quite a bit of discomfort.

How to Know if You Have a Bulging Disc

So how do you differentiate regular back pain from the pain caused by a bulging disc? Keep an eye out for these 3 signs.

1. Pain and Numbness

You will feel pain based on the location of your bulging disc. If the bulging disc is lower down, you may feel pain in your thighs and calf. If the disc is higher up, you will feel a shooting pain in your arm or shoulders. The loss of nerves in the affected area may also make you feel numb.

2. Unexplained Muscle Weakness

If you notice you’re clumsier than usual and your motor coordination isn’t what it used to be, you may have a bulging disc. When the disc bulges and the nerves are affected, your muscles become weakened and this can cause clumsiness which makes it harder for you to carry out your daily activities without stumbling.

3. Limited Mobility

Since a bulging disc causes loss of proper nerve and muscle function in the corresponding area, you will also notice a limitation in your mobility. If you move suddenly, you may feel shooting pain. In serious cases, even coughing or sneezing can become a painful experience.
